Does Home Insurance Cover Hail and Wind Damage in Ohio?
Yes. A standard Ohio homeowners policy usually covers damage from hail and wind, minus your deductible. The Ohio Department of Insurance has reminded storm victims that wind and hail are typically covered under both homeowners and renters policies. The details that trip people up are the deductible and how your roof is valued.
Watch for a separate wind and hail deductible
Some Ohio insurers now use a separate deductible just for wind and hail. It is often a percentage of your dwelling coverage instead of a flat dollar amount. For example, a 1% wind/hail deductible on a home insured for $250,000 means you pay the first $2,500 of a hail claim, even if your regular deductible is $1,000.
Look on your declarations page for wording like "wind/hail deductible" or "named storm deductible." If you can't find it, ask your agent before storm season.
Roof coverage: replacement cost vs. actual cash value
Older roofs are sometimes covered at actual cash value, which subtracts depreciation. A 15-year-old roof might pay out only a fraction of the cost of a new one. Policies with replacement cost coverage for the roof pay what it costs to replace it, minus your deductible. When comparing quotes, ask how each insurer treats your roof.
How to file a hail or wind claim in Ohio
- Stay safe first. Avoid downed lines and don't climb onto a damaged roof.
- Document before you clean up. Take photos and video of all damage and list damaged belongings.
- Contact your insurer quickly. Most policies have deadlines for reporting damage.
- Make safe temporary repairs. Tarping a roof or boarding a window is usually reimbursed as part of the claim. Keep receipts.
- Keep a log. Write down the date, name and title of everyone you talk to and what they said.
- Expect an adjuster visit. The first payment may be an advance, with more to follow.
- If you have a mortgage, checks for structural damage may be made out to you and your lender, who may release money as repairs are completed.
- Choose contractors carefully. Be wary of door-to-door "storm chasers." Check reviews and the Better Business Bureau before signing anything.
What isn't covered
Flooding from heavy rain or rising water is not covered by a standard homeowners policy, even during the same storm. That needs separate flood insurance. See our Ohio flood insurance guide. Damage caused by long-term wear or poor maintenance is also usually excluded.
