How Much Is Home Insurance in Cleveland, Ohio? (2026)
Most Cleveland homeowners can expect to pay somewhere around $1,150 to $1,550 a year for home insurance, depending on the data source and the coverage it assumes. Insurify puts the Cleveland average at $1,536 a year ($128 a month) for $300,000 of dwelling coverage with a $1,000 deductible, a little below its Ohio average and well under the national figure. What you actually pay will depend on your home's rebuild cost, its age, your ZIP code, deductible, claims history and the insurer.
Average Cleveland home insurance cost by source
Comparison sites price different sample homes, so their numbers never match exactly. Here's what three recent sources report for Cleveland:
- Insurify (updated November 1, 2026): $1,536 per year, or $128 a month, for $300,000 of dwelling coverage and a $1,000 deductible. Its Ohio average is about $141 a month, and it cites a national average of $2,772 a year.
- Insuranceopedia (updated October 17, 2026): about $1,219 per year in Cleveland, versus $1,240 for Ohio and $2,408 nationally.
- The Zebra: about $97 a month, with a citywide average premium of $1,165 a year.
All three agree that Cleveland is priced close to the Ohio average, and that Ohio is much cheaper to insure than the country as a whole. How much dwelling coverage you need drives the price
Your dwelling limit should reflect what it would cost to rebuild your home, not its market value. Insurify estimates Cleveland rebuild costs at roughly $145 to $160 per square foot, which works out to about $261,000 to $288,000 for a typical 1,800-square-foot home. The more coverage you buy, the more you pay. The Zebra's Cleveland averages show the pattern:
- $100,000 of dwelling coverage: about $581 per year
- $200,000: about $880 per year
- $250,000: about $1,036 per year
- $400,000: about $1,528 per year
Don't trim your dwelling limit just to cut the premium. If it falls short of your true rebuild cost, a major loss could leave you paying the difference.
Cleveland ZIP codes: a few hundred dollars apart
Where you live in Cleveland changes your rate, but the spread is fairly narrow. According to The Zebra, some of the lower-cost ZIP codes are 44144 (about $1,079 a year), 44135 ($1,113) and 44121 ($1,119), while 44115 ($1,233), 44106 ($1,225) and 44104 ($1,223) are among the most expensive.
Insuranceopedia's figures run a little higher but point the same way. It lists 44135 as the cheapest ZIP at about $1,110 a year, and 44103 as the priciest at about $1,327, with 44104 ($1,304) and 44105 ($1,299) close behind. Insurers weigh local claim history, crime and access to fire protection when they price a neighborhood.
Your deductible: the quickest way to change your premium
Choosing a higher deductible lowers your premium, but you'll cover more of each claim yourself. The Zebra's Cleveland averages:
- $500 deductible: about $1,139 per year
- $1,000 deductible: about $1,036 per year
- $2,000 deductible: about $921 per year
- $5,000 deductible: about $774 per year
Pick a deductible you could pay on short notice. Also check whether your policy has a separate percentage deductible for wind or hail; our guide to hail and wind damage in Ohio explains how those work.
What makes Cleveland homes different to insure
Older housing stock
Cleveland's homes skew old. Insurify reports that the average age of homes sold in the city in 2024 was 65 years. Older roofs, wiring, plumbing and heating systems can mean higher premiums or fewer insurer choices, and Insuranceopedia notes that the cheapest companies for older homes in Cleveland are not the same as those for newer construction. Updating key systems and keeping receipts can help when you shop.
Property crime
Insurify says Cleveland has a much higher property crime rate than the rest of Ohio, while its natural disaster risk is relatively low. A monitored security system may help lower your premium, so ask about it when you get quotes.
Flooding and water backup
Insurify flags homes along the Cuyahoga River and in low-lying spots as prone to flood and water damage. A standard homeowners policy doesn't cover flooding, so you'd need a separate policy through the NFIP or a private insurer. Water that backs up through a basement drain or a failed sump pump is also usually excluded unless you add a water backup endorsement. See Do You Need Flood Insurance in Ohio?
Storms and rebuild costs
Insuranceopedia lists floods, thunderstorms, tornadoes, winter storms and rising rebuild costs among the reasons Cleveland rates have been climbing.
How to lower your Cleveland home insurance bill
- Compare several insurers. Prices for the same home vary a lot. In The Zebra's Cleveland data, the five lowest-priced companies ranged from about $754 to $971 a year.
- Bundle home and auto. The Zebra estimates Cleveland homeowners save about 10% on average by bundling. Our bundling guide covers when it makes sense.
- Raise your deductible if you have savings to cover it.
- Ask about discounts for security systems, a newer roof, updated systems, being claim-free or paying in full.
- Review your coverage every year so your dwelling limit keeps up with local construction costs.
Averages are only a starting point. To see what you'd really pay, get quotes for your own Cleveland home and compare coverage, deductibles and limits side by side, not just the price.
